Boskalis found an innovative solution to deepen the entrance to Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne. During the project it came to their attention that certain parts of the bay could not be handled with conventional equipment, because the surface matter was primarily hard rock. In order to tackle this problem, Boskalis put in years of research. This led to the development of a new ripper draghead, which is strong enough to cut through hard rock. It works as well as regular draghead and it compatible with the existing trailing suction hopper dredger.
