Looking for alternatives for the global fossil fuel dependency, The Netherlands introduces an intelligent energy solution: a smart electricity network that enables residents to use their electric cars' batteries to store locally produced energy, for instance from solar panels. These public posts can charge and discharge batteries in electric vehicles, making the them an energy storage platform. This approach makes it possible for households, via an open data platform, to organize their own energy supply cost-effectively and sustainably. This contributes to the challenge of the storage of renewable energy.
In Holland, 8 million cars remain unused for approximately 23 hours a day. In 2011, Victor van Tol and Pascal Ontijd, decided to address this challenge and founded SnappCar: an online community where nowadays more than 120.000 Dutch, Danish and German consumers share their cars: the cars are all-risk insured, participants are screened carefully and SnappCar offers 24/7 help and service. Nereda® raises health and water standards by using a new method for wastewater treatment. The technology uses aerobic granular biomass to produce clean water. Nereda® was invented at Delft University, and developed in cooperation with the Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research (STOWA), the Dutch Water Boards and Royal HaskoningDHV, of which the latter commercialized the product. The technology is more effective and less expensive than traditional methods, it is more efficient in terms of land use, resources and energy, and it does not make use of toxic chemicals. This leads to cleaner water, at lower economic and environmental cost.
Circular economy principles are increasingly implemented to contribute to long-term sustainability goals. Ioniqa, a clean-tech start-up, developed a circular PET-plastics recycling process to address the enormous problem of plastic waste in the world. Conventional techniques can only recycle limited amounts of returned PET-plastics (worldwide only 10%, N-Europe 50%). By removing the colourants in PET-waste, Ioniqa's process - using smart nano-materials - converts all kinds of low-grade coloured PET-waste into pure raw materials. This is of similar high-quality and costs as PET made from crude-oil, thereby closing the loop for worldwide PET-production (50 MMton yearly), contributing to a cleaner world.
Removal of solid waste through the sewer system, for a cleaner hospital; removal of medicinal residues from wastewater for a cleaner environment. This, in short, is what the Pharmafilter-system promises. Shredders are used in the hospital in place of the traditional bedpan cleaners and at places where waste is generated. An installation is set up outside the hospital, which digests and decontaminates the solid waste. All wastewater is purified and cleaned of medicinal residues. The Pharmafilter-system makes it feasible to address processes in the hospital through the introduction of biodegradable, disposable products instead of products that need to be sterilized after each use, such as bedpans, urinals and cutlery.
Packaging material contributes heavily to the global production plastic waste, of which only a low percentage is recycled. Dutch firm Rodenburg and Taghleef have found a method of producing flexible packaging material. In order to accomplish this, their process combines potato starch with polylactic acid (PLA) waste, which is a biodegradable polymer made of plant starch. The result of this is a food grade polymer film that is biodegradable and takes only a third of energy to produce compared to oil-based alternatives. Thus the technology has considerable economic benefits and reduces waste streams in the process.
The new e-commerce distribution center of Wehkamp in Zwolle is the largest automated distribution center in the world. It enables same-day delivery for customers, as parcels are ready to be sent within 30 minutes. Previously this process took approximately two hours. The center is equipped with new automation techniques that reduces the risk of mistakes to nearly zero. Furthermore, the building is BREEAM certified "Excellent" for sustainability: this is the highest possible score. Solar panels deliver a total of 40 percent of the necessary energy and there is thermal energy is being stored in the building.
RoadDNA by TomTom is a database using a 3D point cloud of roadside patterns compressed into a 2D view of the roadway. This creates a system requiring little storage space and limited processing requirements, without losing detail. It can be used to deliver highly accurate location information to the on-board system of a vehicle. By matching RoadDNA data with vehicle sensor data in real-time a vehicle knows its location on the road, even while traveling at high speeds or when changes occur to the roadside. RoadDNA is expected to support driverless vehicles.

Therefore Holland Container Innovations has developed 4FOLD, world's first certified 40ft HC foldable container. Costs and environmental issues due to empty transport can be strongly lowered when 4FOLD is introduced. An empty 4FOLD is folded to a quarter of the height. Four folded containers can be transported as one bundle. The container is already in use by three major shipping lines. 4FOLD has the potential to greatly improve efficiency in container transport.

Fossil fuels are not endless. To stimulate the sustainable development of the transportation and logistics sectors, a joint-venture of Royal DSM and POET, LLC developed a cost-competitive fuel that cuts emissions, creates jobs and improves energy security. The companies initiative 'Advanced Biofuels' is the first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant that has opened for business. Their revolutionary technology converts agricultural residue into renewable fuel. This process takes place in both companies' plant where baled corn cobs, leaves, husk and stalk are converted into renewable fuel. This development marks a huge step forward in the wider adoption of biofuels.
